SPOILERS AHEAD! Technically a masterpiece, but we would expect nothing less theese days. Character-wise I disagree with Chris. For a story of this kind, I think they managed to create just enough background, motivation and character-arch to make me care about the main charachters. However, what made me more than a bit disappointed with this film was some unnessesary historical inacurracies and a few major plot holes. For historical inacurracies, or rather historical revisionism, the big one is that the movie gives the impression that the british soldiers are starving while the germans live in luxury behind the lines. In this time of the war, germany had just endured the turnip winter they would not have killed livestock and left them to rot in the fields. The British on the other hand were well supplied from their colonies, the commonwealth and USA. Also, Germany had major shortage of other resourses. The zone they left behind had been picked clean of every bit of useful metal. Shell casings were definitively recycled. Guns were not destroyed but redisributed to other areas, that was one of the points of the Hindenburg line- to straighten the front line and free up troops and artillery pieces. (btw, what is a howitzer doing a hundred yards behind the front line? That gun can reach miles) The German fortifications on the west front were generally more elaborate than the allies’ but that was because the germans were defending captured territory whereas the allies intended to push the germans back and never intended to stay too long at their positions. For plotholes here are a few: why would a downed German pilot with wounded legs kill the guys who just saved him from burning alive? He knows that Germany has abandoned this area. He will not be able to walk away from there, but will slowly die from his wounds, or be found by the next british troops -with two dead british soldiers by his side. Pilots in WW1, on both sides, saw themselves as gentlemen soldiers. The guys on the ground, who had been in the shit, might kill a pilot out of hate, but the pilot would have been expecting to sit out the rest of the war in a nice officer’s pow camp in the english countryside. Surviving guy takes rings and dogtag from recently deceased guy. Should have taken his watch too! It would have been useful later! Sloppy writing. Truck. or Lorry- scene: This scene is so stupid it hurts. The first obstacle is a tree blocking the road. Going over the completely flat ground at the side of the road is not an option, even after the caravan have miraculously crossed over from the british side of the no-mans-land. Then the truck gets bogged. (The three trucks before this one managed the puddle just fine) Mud is black here, but brown everywhere else. We have already seen a lot of limestone, so the mud should really be white or gray. At first he tries to push the truck himself, while it is full of people. The Driver somehow knows when to push the gas even though he can not hear or see the guy who is organizing the pushing effort. Why is the other trucks not towing the one that got bogged? Who wrote this scene and why? Then the ride ends after a such a short time that there is no way we would be in a new location, but what do you know: here is the town all of a sudden. If someone had stood on top of that fallen tree by the farm they would have seen all the way to the destroyed bridge! The officer gives him some good advice and a slap on the shoulder, but cannot spare a single guy to help our hero on his very important mission. (I would have chosen the guy with the turban, he seemed solid. HEY! Why couldn’t the movie be about him instead? I Dare you filmmakers, to make a war movie with a non-white protagonist. Token diversity is insuficcient in 2020! Next scene: Hero run in to the worst sniper in the Kaiser’s army, shoots him without aiming, goes up there to make sure, but is taken by surprise and gets himself shot. Should have used those grenades you got in the first scene! He sleeps for a few hours, and then he is good to go. We meet a french young woman with a baby in a drawer. I would have assumed the baby was hers, but it’s not. Our protagonist on the other hand does not jump to such conclusions. This is just weird writing. He got to use the milk, good. This is like a puzzle game. (then again, why not the watch or the grenades) no, not on the baby of course) Woman tends to his wound that is on the back of his head. I seem to remember he was facing the sniper when he was shot, but I guess it was from falling down the stairs or something. Wound is instantly healed after being touched by her hankerchief. No time to eat, and we are off again. And it goes on like this. The movie is visually and technically amazing, but it assumes the viewer suspends disbelief in almost every scene. There is no reason for this kind of bad storytelling. The worst mistake is probably that in the end, we never get to see the Hindenburg line. The whole plot builds on the awesomeness of this new fortification the germans have secretly built. We are to assume it is on the other side of that field, but that is it. He saved my life. And yours, and the lives of all of these men. he could have added) Good thing the picture survived the soaking in the river. The one-shot thing is an interesting idea for a film, but it sets up certain restrictions for location and elapsed time. If you then go ahead and break those rules, you have failed. The illusion is broken. It works in ”Birdman” but that is because that movie is magical realism.
